Day 30 – Your favorite song at this time last year
Billy Currington - People are Crazy

Apparently several artists put this song "on hold" but never got around to recording, which was great news for Billy Currington.  It's a great story song, and he does a fantastic job with it.  I love his voice, which certainly doesn't hurt.

Day 28 – A song that makes you feel guilty
Jimmy Wayne - Paper Angels

Jimmy Wayne grew up in the foster system, so he is intimately familiar with the Giving Trees we all see in our local stores and malls.  During the holidays Jim and I try to contribute to different groups and kids who don't have much, but it never seems to be enough.

Day 27 – A song that you wish you could play
John Denver - Take Me Home, Country Roads

I've always liked the simplicity of John Denver's music.  I listened to a lot of his music growing up, as there were several of his albums in my dad's music collection.  When he died so tragically in 1997 I had an impulse to learn to play guitar so that I could play his music.  Jim was thoughtful enough to get me a guitar so I could learn, but I never quite got the hang of it.  If I had, I like to think this is the song I would learn first.

Day 26 – A song that you can play on an instrument
Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline

In the 5th grade I joined my first organized school band, playing my mom's old clarinet.  Our director was a young, cool guy named Mr. Freberg, so it wasn't too surprising that the first song he gave us to play was a semi-current one.  It's a pretty simple song to play, but we sure had a good time with it.

Day 25 – A song that makes you smile
Kenny Chesney - Summertime

This was actually "a song that makes you laugh" but I didn't want to get into novelty songs, which are really the only ones that make me laugh.  So I went with smile.  This is one of those songs that just feels like summertime, and makes me smile.  Plus I got to see him perform it live, and if you wanted to go all CSI you could probably find my picture in People magazine, since they published a picture from that Seattle concert.  :)

Day 24 – A song that you want to play at your funeral
Garth Brooks - The Dance

At the beginning of the video for this song Garth talks about how he'd like to have this song played at his funeral, and I have to agree.  Life (and death) may have some pain involved, but I wouldn't miss this dance for anything.

Obviously this song wasn't available when Jim and I got married, but it's perfect.

Day 22 – A song that you listen to when you’re sad
Trace Adkins - I Wanna Feel Something

Being a fairly happy person I don't really feel sad very often.  What happens more often is that I have a period where I feel empty and hollow.  This song captures that feeling fairly well.

Day 21 – A song that you listen to when you’re happy
Toad the Wet Sprocket - All I Want

I love the harmonies and the chorus of this song, although looking at the lyrics I'm not exactly sure it's a happy song.  Hopefully he's remembering back to a better time...
