I got this CD for Christmas, and have really enjoyed it.
1. Forever Road
I was pretty sure that this song was going to be my favorite one on the CD the first time I heard it. Great melody, great lyrics, all about the fact that no matter what happens in the relationship, they are on a forever road. Together.
2. All I Want
The title sounds like a love song, doesn't it? "All I want is you, for all time, yadda yadda yadda..." Except that it isn't. The full line is "All I want you to leave me is alone." Bam! He wants her out of his life.
3. Don't Think I Don't Think About It
The lead single from this CD and Darius' country music career. It went to #1, making him the first African American to top the Country charts since Charley Pride. Congratulations, Darius! He broke up with his girlfriend and even though she's married to someone else he still occasionally thinks about their time together and how things might have worked out if they hadn't split up.
4. Learn To Live
Ah, the lessons that we learn from our parents and grandparents. Sometimes they aren't so helpful, but occasionally something good slips through. In a fun, upbeat song he learns that needs to live life to its fullest, take some chances and not be afraid to fail, in order to really live.
5. If I Had Wings
The world seems to be crashing all around him, so he wants wings so that he can fly to Heaven and get some answers.
6. History In The Making
This song centers around the first kiss he shares with (presumably) his wife. He knows that it will be something they will both remember forever, much like history in the making.
7. Alright
At the beginning of this song he repeats the word "alright" multiple times so I was a bit wary. I tend to not like songs that have very few words, as if the songwriter couldn't be bothered to tell a complete story. Fortunately this one picked up quickly after a shaky start. He's saying that you can keep all the finer things in life - he has the woman he loves in bed next to him, so everything is alright.
8. It Won't Be Like This For Long
His follow-up single, it's a song he wrote for his wife and daughter. He's both amazed and scared to think about their new baby girl and how quickly he knows she'll grow up. He knows that sometimes she'll act like she hates him, and has her married off in his mind before he comes back to reality and enjoys these quiet moments with her.
9. Drinkin' and Dialin'
A cautionary tale - if you're out drinking and have had a little too much, make sure your buddies take away your car keys AND your cell phone, lest you wake up the next morning in bed with your ex.
10. I Hope They Get To Me In Time
When I saw the title to this song I thought that it might be a metaphor for something else, but it's exactly what it sounds like. He's been in a car accident caused by a drunk driver and his life is flashing before his eyes. He really hopes that someone rescues him so that he can continue to live his life with the family he oves. The only song on the CD that Darius didn't write or co-write.
11. While I Still Got The Time
A song built around the suggestion to "dance like no one's watching," it's just a reminder to live life to its fullest.
12. Be Wary Of A Woman
Another cautionary tale - if you're a guy who really likes his freedom, watch out for the women out there that will love you because of or in spite of this. You might be surprised that you can have it all.
All in all a very strong CD. I've said numerous times before that I tend to like music by singer/songwriters, and this no exception. I think this one will hang around in my car for a while.
